Ottoman Fabric Calculator

Unlike a soft box cushion, a structured ottoman is normally built with four separate side panels rather than one wraparound strip, because the corners are sewn (and often piped) as sharp, furniture-like seams instead of a continuous curve of fabric. The bottom is frequently left as a plain dust-cover fabric rather than the show fabric — this calculator gives you the show-fabric top and four sides; add a bottom panel separately if you're covering it in the same fabric.

    Typical sizes

Square and rectangular ottomans commonly run 24–40 in (61–102 cm) across and 14–18 in (36–46 cm) tall. Round ottomans need a very different pattern (a circular top and a single curved side strip) — this calculator is for square and rectangular ottomans.

    Where this goes wrong

Tall ottoman sides (anything over about 16 in / 41 cm) may exceed a standard fabric width when the fabric has to run vertically for grain — check the height field against your fabric width before ordering. Corners are usually piped; add a welt allowance the same way as the piped-cushion calculator if yours will be.

    Seam allowance

Seam allowance 1/2 in (1.3 cm) is standard for upholstery-weight fabric.
