Fabric width conversion calculator
Patterns and older sewing books often list yardage for a specific fabric width — commonly 45 in. If your fabric is a different width, the length you need changes too. This assumes the same total area of fabric and scales the length accordingly; it doesn't reshuffle a cutting layout, so treat it as a close estimate rather than an exact figure for very irregular pieces.
Why this isn't a straight ratio for every project
This calculator scales by total area, which is accurate for simple rectangular yardage. For a project with many oddly-shaped pieces — a garment pattern, say — a wider fabric can sometimes fit the same pieces in noticeably less length than the area ratio predicts, because the pieces nest differently.
