Bench Cushion Fabric Calculator

Bench and window-seat cushions use the same box-cushion construction — top, bottom, wraparound boxing — but the width is usually driven by the piece of furniture, not a standard cushion size, and it's often long enough that fabric railroading (whether the pattern runs sideways on the bolt) changes how much you need.

    Typical sizes

Window-seat cushions typically run 36–72 in (91–183 cm) long by 18–22 in (46–56 cm) deep; entryway bench cushions are often narrower and longer. Anything over about 6 ft (183 cm) is usually made as two or three separate cushions rather than one long one, both for comfort and because most fabric bolts aren't that wide for the boxing strip.

    Where this goes wrong

If the bench is deeper than your fabric is wide, the top and bottom panels will need a seam — plan its position (centred, or offset to a rear corner) rather than letting the layout put it somewhere visible. Add a strip of non-slip shelf liner or hook-and-loop tape under long cushions so they don't creep on a smooth bench seat.

    Seam allowance

Seam allowance 1/2 in (1.3 cm) is standard for upholstery-weight fabric.
